Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Practice (Graphic Design) students of Stamford College, part of Inspire Education Group, followed a live brief to design beer pump clips for locally-based, Oakham Ales. Producing original illustrations for the Winter Wisp Winter Pale, Lily Thompson was declared the winning entrant.

Stamford College and Oakham Ales have partnered for the last three years to offer learners the beer pump clip live brief, with a catalogue of imaginative clips having been produced since, including Cosmic Jellyfish, Eclipse, Yonder and Echo. Pamela Mairs, Lecturer in Graphic Design, explained the benefit of this experience on students’ learning, “This is a fantastic brief that enables our students to create artwork that will be used commercially, showing them in real terms ‘Work Related Learning’. Receiving feedback from a client and developing their work in line with the client’s requirements gives them a glimpse of what working in industry is truly like”.
Oakham Ales were impressed by the work of all entrants, with Nick Jones, Off Trade and Export Manager, saying, “Right from the briefing session at the start of the project, we were delighted with the way that the group embraced their task and by the imagination and hard work they displayed in developing their designs in response to our feedback. Thanks to all of the students who took part and provided us with so many high-quality design ideas to choose from, and of course to Pam Mairs and the rest of the Stamford College staff team who supported and facilitated the project”.
The brewery declared Lily Thompson as the winning entrant, impressed by her depiction of a mid-flight owl and winter sky. Delighted, Lily said, “I am very pleased with the results and proud that Oakham Ales chose my design as the winning entry. I am progressing onto an Illustration Degree course and this brief has enabled me to have my first published illustration — a valuable entry on my CV”.
Inspire Education Group gives thanks to Oakham Ales for its continued partnership and looks forward to seeing Lily’s work in action.
