Course overview

This course is designed to devel­op your expe­ri­ence and skills for work­ing in a vari­ety of motor indus­try sec­tors. You will gain a good work­ing knowl­edge of tools and equip­ment, vehi­cles engines and engine sys­tems, chas­sis sys­tems, trans­mis­sion and dri­ve-line com­po­nents, in our ful­ly-equipped workshops.

 

Entry Require­ments

3 GCSEs at grades 3/D or above includ­ing Eng­lish, maths and sci­ence or the Vehi­cle Tech­nol­o­gy Entry Lev­el Diploma.

The major­i­ty of appli­cants enrol on this Lev­el 1 course, how­ev­er your hands on expe­ri­ence and pre­vi­ous aca­d­e­m­ic achieve­ments may deter­mine the lev­el of course you are offered.

We will there­fore review each appli­ca­tion on a case-by-case basis to ensure you get a place on the course most suit­able for you.

One of the ways we do this is through a very effec­tive 6 weeks to suc­cess pro­gramme’ that oper­ates from the first day you start your course. This includes sup­port such as (but not lim­it­ed to):

  • Allow­ing you to change cours­es if you change your mind in the first 6 weeks — sub­ject to course availability

  • Mov­ing you between course lev­els if you are find­ing your cur­rent lev­el too easy / too hard sub­ject to course availability

  • Incor­po­rat­ing Eng­lish and maths GCSE resits in to your timetable if you don’t pass at Grade 4

  • One-to-one reviews with your aca­d­e­m­ic tutor to ensure you are pro­gress­ing and achiev­ing well

Poten­tial Future Career

On suc­cess­ful com­ple­tion of this course, you can progress to the Lev­el 2 Diplo­ma in Light Vehi­cle Main­te­nance and Repair, or the Lev­el 2 Diplo­ma in Motor Sport Vehi­cle Main­te­nance and Repair. You may also apply to a Motor Vehi­cle Main­te­nance and Repair Apprenticeship.

  • Spark igni­tion engine systems 
  • Com­po­nents and oper­a­tions com­pres­sion igni­tion engine systems 
  • Com­po­nents and operation 
  • Steer­ing and sus­pen­sion sys­tems com­po­nents and main­te­nance (4 wheels or more) 
  • Vehi­cle brak­ing sys­tems com­po­nents and maintenance 
  • Vehi­cle wheels and tyres con­struc­tion and maintenance 
  • Vehi­cle exhaust sys­tems com­po­nents and maintenance 
  • Intro­duc­tion to low car­bon tech­nolo­gies in the auto­mo­tive industry 
  • Vehi­cle elec­tri­cal foun­da­tion skills 
  • Basic vehi­cle valeting 
  • Light vehi­cle construction 
  • Remov­ing and replac­ing light vehi­cle elec­tri­cal units and components 
  • Remov­ing and replac­ing light vehi­cle chas­sis units and components 
  • Inspec­tion, repair and replace­ment of high per­for­mance light vehi­cle tyres
