Course overview

Gas Engi­neer­ing involves the safe instal­la­tion, com­mis­sion, decom­mis­sion and the ongo­ing ser­vice and repair of gas appli­ances in either a domes­tic or non-domes­tic set­ting. Appli­ances can include, but are not lim­it­ed to: a range of work cat­e­gories such as cen­tral heat­ing, boil­ers, unvent­ed hot water stor­age, duct­ed air heaters, cook­ers, space heaters, meters, alter­na­tive fuel, boost­ers, test­ing and purg­ing for indus­tri­al pipework.

What Does The Pro­gramme Include

You will be employed as an appren­tice for at least 30 hours a week. You will have a work­place men­tor or super­vi­sor who will be respon­si­ble for your train­ing and wel­fare at work. You will attend the Gas Cen­tre at col­lege for one day a week.

Entry Require­ments

Indi­vid­ual employ­ers set their own entry require­ments. How­ev­er, you will typ­i­cal­ly require 5 GCSEs at grades 4/C or above, prefer­able includ­ing Eng­lish, maths and science. 

You may also be required to under­take a recog­nised back­ground check, equiv­a­lent to Dis­clo­sure and Bar­ring Ser­vice (DBS).

How The Course Will Be Assessed

An asses­sor will vis­it you in the work­place to assess your progress against stan­dards and set SMART objectives.

Poten­tial Future Career

In achiev­ing a pass or a dis­tinc­tion in this appren­tice­ship, you will be eli­gi­ble to apply for mem­ber­ship with the Insti­tu­tion of Gas Engi­neers and Man­agers (IGEM) pro­fes­sion­al reg­is­tra­tion as an Engi­neer­ing Tech­ni­cian (EngTech)

Course Con­tent

You will gain the fol­low­ing knowledge:

  • Cur­rent Health, Safe­ty and Envi­ron­men­tal leg­is­la­tion and reg­u­la­tions applic­a­ble to work in the gas industry.
  • Safe gas and elec­tri­cal instal­la­tion, com­mis­sion­ing, decom­mis­sion­ing and/​or ongo­ing ser­vice and repair pro­ce­dures of gas instal­la­tions and appli­ances need­ed to estab­lish the safe oper­a­tion of the equip­ment and instal­la­tion in accor­dance with indus­try standards.
  • Gas and elec­tri­cal the­o­ries and pro­ce­dures involved in the prac­ti­cal instal­la­tion, com­mis­sion­ing, decom­mis­sion­ing and/​or ongo­ing ser­vice and repair of gas instal­la­tions, appli­ances and asso­ci­at­ed equipment.




I’ve real­ly enjoyed study­ing here it has giv­en me a great insight to the com­pa­ny, I’m now look­ing for­ward to a career as a plumber!
