Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship Standard Level 2

You will be employed as an appren­tice for at least 30 hours a week. You will have a work­place men­tor or super­vi­sor who will be respon­si­ble for your train­ing and wel­fare at work. You will typ­i­cal­ly attend col­lege for one day a week (term time only)

Indi­vid­ual employ­ers set their own entry require­ments. How­ev­er, you will need to pass an ini­tial apti­tude test and be pre­pared to work towards achiev­ing Func­tion­al Skills Lev­el 1.

Assess­ment will be con­tin­u­ous through oral, writ­ten and prac­ti­cal work. An asses­sor will vis­it you in your work­place to car­ry out prac­ti­cal assess­ments and mon­i­tor your progress. Cer­ti­fi­ca­tion will be accred­it­ed on com­ple­tion of your port­fo­lio evi­dence and achieve­ment of func­tion­al skills.

19 — 23 years No con­tri­bu­tion is required at this moment in time.(employers may wish to help towards the costs)

24+ years Not fund­ed. Course costs payable by employer/​individual but loans may be avail­able through the 24+ Advanced Learn­ing Loan scheme.

As a ful­ly com­pe­tent Site Car­pen­ter or Archi­tec­tur­al Join­er, you’ll meet the require­ments of the Con­struc­tion Skills Cer­ti­fi­ca­tion Scheme (CSCS) ​‘Skilled Work­er’ stan­dard. You can also progress to a Car­pen­try and Join­ery Advanced Appren­tice­ship Lev­el 3.

You will need to com­plete the crit­era with­in the Assess­ment Plan for Skills, Knowl­edge and Behaviours.

Skills: On com­ple­tion of this appren­tice­ship car­pen­try and join­ery work­ers will be able to safe­ly and be aware of key health, safe­ty and wel­fare issues. Plan and car­ry out their work to com­mer­i­cal stan­dards of qual­i­ty and speed, move han­dle and store resources, such as mate­ri­als and tim­ber com­po­nents, com­ply­ing with rel­e­vant leg­is­la­tion and guid­ance, inter­pret and fol­low ver­bal and writ­ten work instruc­tions from trade super­vi­sors and site man­agers, select the required mate­ri­als to car­ry out the work, such as cor­rect tim­ber, tools and fix­ings, access, inter­pret and use draw­ings and spec­i­fi­ca­tions to car­ry out their work.

Knowl­edge: On com­ple­tion of this appren­tice­ship, car­pen­try and join­ery work­ers will have the fol­low­ing core knowl­edge to; Under­stand the prin­ci­ples of health, safe­ty and wel­fare and how these are applied in the work­place, under­stand how to com­mu­ni­cate with oth­ers and com­ply with instruc­tions and direc­tions, under­stand the dif­fer­ent tech­niques and meth­ods used to move, han­dle and store mate­ri­als, under­stand how to inter­pret and use rel­e­vant prod­uct infor­ma­tion and spec­i­fi­ca­tions, under­stand their respon­si­bil­i­ties under cur­rent employ­ment and safe­ty leg­is­la­tion such as The Health and Safe­ty at Work Act, under­stand how to cal­cu­late quan­ti­ty, length area and wastage of resources, under­stand the needs of otrher work­ers and how to work effec­tive­ly with oth­ers, under­stand the char­ac­ter­is­tics, qual­i­ty, use sus­tain­abil­i­ty, lim­i­ta­tions and defects asso­ci­at­ed with tim­ber and tim­ber based prod­ucts and com­po­nents, such as hard­wood, soft­wood, MDF and oth­er materials.
