Animal Management (Extended) Diploma Level 3

You will learn through a com­bi­na­tion of the­o­ry and prac­ti­cal-based learn­ing includ­ing writ­ten assess­ments, group dis­cus­sions, pre­sen­ta­tions and prac­ti­cal handling.

5 GCSEs at grades 4/C or above includ­ing Eng­lish, maths and sci­ence, or for stu­dents with a Lev­el 2 Ani­mal Care Diplo­ma a Mer­it pass plus GCSE Eng­lish and maths at grade 4/C or above and a Dis­tinc­tion in Biology .

We will review each appli­ca­tion on a case-by-case basis to ensure you get a place on the course most suit­able for you. 

One of the ways we do this is through a very effec­tive ​‘6 weeks to suc­cess pro­gramme’ that oper­ates from the first day you start your course. This includes sup­port such as (but not lim­it­ed to):

• Allow­ing you to change cours­es if you change your mind in the first 6 weeks — sub­ject to course availability 
• Mov­ing you between course lev­els if you are find­ing your cur­rent lev­el too easy / too hard — sub­ject to course availability 
• One-to-one reviews with your aca­d­e­m­ic tutor to ensure you are pro­gress­ing and achiev­ing well

You will study 15 units over­all, three of which will be assessed exter­nal­ly through exams. The remain­ing units will be assessed through a vari­ety of meth­ods includ­ing, prac­ti­cal assess­ments, writ­ten assign­ments, pre­sen­ta­tions and port­fo­lios of evi­dence. You will also do 300 hours of work place­ment in the sec­ond year of the course.

This course allows stu­dents to explore the many dif­fer­ent careers avail­able in the ani­mal care indus­try. You will have access to over 100 dif­fer­ent species housed in the on-site Ani­mal Stud­ies unit and devel­op nec­es­sary skills in ani­mal man­age­ment and hus­bandry. The Ani­mal Stud­ies unit includes a range of small mam­mals, rep­tiles, amphib­ians, fish and inver­te­brates, as well as a large out­side area hous­ing rab­bits, guinea pigs, fer­rets, birds, mar­mosets and meerkats. 

Addi­tion­al­ly, the unit also ben­e­fits from a large prac­ti­cal class­room which is used for demon­stra­tions, ani­mal health assess­ments and ani­mal train­ing tuto­ri­als. You will be taught by lec­tur­ers with a range of indus­try expe­ri­ence such as canine nutri­tion, zool­o­gy, vet­eri­nary nurs­ing and behaviour. 

You may have oppor­tu­ni­ties to take part in vis­its to zoos, wildlife cen­tres, farms, ken­nels, and safari parks as well as indus­try events with the chance to speak to pro­fes­sion­als who cur­rent­ly work with­in the sector.

There are hands on prac­ti­cal ele­ments to this course and steel toe capped boots and sen­si­ble cloth­ing is required although tunics will be pro­vid­ed for use whilst work­ing on the Ani­mal Stud­ies Unit. All jew­ellery and pierc­ings must be tak­en off dur­ing prac­ti­cals and long hair tied back.

On suc­cess­ful com­ple­tion of this course you can progress on the HND in Ani­mal Man­age­ment at Uni­ver­si­ty Cen­tre Peter­bor­ough, oth­er degrees at Uni­ver­si­ty, or careers such as:
